An "out" is a card that completes your hand. Count your outs, and you know your odds. This is the cheat sheet for the draws you meet every session — exact percentages, computed by counting the cards left in the deck.

You don't need the table at the felt — estimate it. On the flop, multiply your outs by 4 for a rough chance of hitting by the river (a 9-out flush draw ≈ 36%). With one card to come, multiply by 2 (≈ 18%). The shortcut is within a point or two of the exact figures above, which come straight from counting the unseen cards.
Hitting your draw isn't the same as it being profitable — that depends on pot odds: the price you're paying versus the chance you complete. If the pot lays you better odds than your draw needs, calling makes money over time even when you miss most of the time. That's the whole game of drawing hands.
